MRRI Scientist Shares Wetland Research at Regional Wetland Manager Meeting

Ildiko C. Pechmann, Ph.D., Senior Environmental Scientist with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority’s Meadowlands Research and Restoration Institute (MRRI), recently shared her team’s work at the annual Mid-Atlantic Wetland Workgroup Meeting, held at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, Davis WV, September 22-25, 2025.
Hosted by the National Association of Wetland Managers, the meeting brings together scientists, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to discuss real-world solutions for protecting and improving wetlands across the region. This year’s event focused on closing gaps in state wetland protection plans, encouraging public involvement, and improving how agencies share data.
Dr. Pechmann presented MRRI’s latest efforts to monitor and restore wetlands in the Hackensack Meadowlands, including results from a recent study that looked at how well these tidal wetlands can adapt to rising sea levels in the region.
As part of the meeting, participants also took a field trip to explore West Virginia’s unique wetland ecosystems, including a spruce swamp and a cranberry peatland in Blackwater State Park, while learning about a West Virginia’s rapid wetland assessment method.
