The Meadowlands Festival of Birding is Sunday, Oct

The Meadowlands Festival of Birding is Sunday, Oct. 2, at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst!

The event starts with an early bird walk at 7 a.m. and continues throughout the day until 3 p.m. There will also be live raptor shows, a keynote talk on Osprey, kid’s crafts and games, and much more.

Last week Meadowlands Environment Center educators

Last week Meadowlands Environment Center educators placed Artificial Floating Islands in the tidal impoundment at DeKorte Park. They are anchored to marshland. Ridgefield Park students in Grades 6-8 created the Floating Islands in a month-long project in which MEC educators guided the students through the exercise.

Artificial Floating Islands serve various functions, including water purification through absorption; habitat for fish, birds, and other organisms; breaking waves; and landscape improvement.

In addition to stomping out the dreaded, invasive Spotted Lanternfly, the NJSEA is using a Shop vac to eradicate the species, which has taken over many trees in DeKorte Park. The lanternflies are vaccumed up into a mixture of water and dish soap.

Mark Your Calendar: Meadowlands Birding Festival Is Sunday, Oct. 2!

The Bergen County Audubon Society and New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority are proud to present the Meadowlands Birding Festival on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst. The event is free.

The day will feature speakers, bird and nature walks, field trips, kid’s activities, information tables, and more. Giselle Chazotte Smisko (pictured above), Director of the non-profit Avian Wildlife Center (and bird rehabilitation center), will bring some residents with her.
Wildlife Biologist Meghan Kolk of the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey. Meghan will speak on American Kestrels.

Last week Ridgefield Park students in Grades 6-8 launched Artificial Floating Islands (AFI) that help the environment in the tidal impoundment at DeKorte Park. The event was the culmination of a month-long project in which Meadowlands Environment Center educations and NJSEA parks staff helped guide the studends in constructing AFIs with native vegetation.
